What is Fail Safe and Fail Secure?

This article discusses the differences between fail safe and fail secure.

Fail Safe means the system goes to a safe condition when loop is bad or a fault occurs.

  • When loop fail → the output changes state to allow access or prevent entrapment
  • Designed to prioritize safety over security

Fail Secure means the system stays locked or secure when loop is bad or a fault occur.

  • When loop fail → the output does NOT allow access
  • Designed to prioritize security over convenience
